The Truth
The comment was broadcast by
syndicated columnist Cal Thomas in November, 2002, who says he heard
it from Ashcroft himself.
Ashcroft's office, however, released a statement in February, 2003,
saying that the reported words "do not accurately reflect what
I believe I said."
