Apartment Building In Shanghai Topples Over-Truth!
Summary of the eRumor: This is a forwarded email with
amazing photos of an apartment building lying on its side.
The email says the photo is of a 12 story building in China that toppled over
after work began to build an adjacent underground parking structure.
The Truth: The 13 story apartment
building located in Eastern Shanghai, China, collapsed at 5:30AM on June
27, 2009. One worker died when the building fell over,
according to a China Daily News report released that day.
The news report said
that a preliminary investigation report blamed, poor construction and
improper planning which led to the collapse of the residential building.

(1) An underground garage was being dug on the south side, to a depth of
4.6 meters.
(2) The excavated dirt was being piled up on the north side, to a height
of 10 meters.
(3) The building experienced uneven lateral pressure from south and
north.
(4) This resulted in a lateral pressure of 3,000 tons, which was greater
than what the pilings could tolerate. Thus the building toppled over in
the southerly direction.
