A Plea for help for the Lopez Family-Truth!

Summary of the eRumor:
A forwarded email that tells a story of a series of tragic events in the life of a family in Melrose Park, Illinois and asks for donations.

The Truth:
The plea for help is real and began circulating in December of 2008.

The email originated from a woman named Dorlelia Riveria who functioned as an advocated for the Lopez Family and confirmed with Truthorfiction.com that she has set up a fund at the MB Financial Bank in Chicago, Illinois for donations for the Lopez family.

This family has been met with a series of tragic challenges from the unemployment of Sergio Lopez, the death of his wife San Juana Lopez, and a fire that destroyed the home that they were renting.  Their son, Brian, was born with cerebral palsy and has been experiencing health problems since the death of his mother.

A customer service person from the MB Financial Bank verified the fund to help the family.

A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:

Third tragedy hits Melrose Park family – they need your help

This Christmas, 7-year-old Brian Lopez, four-year old Sergio Lopez and 8-month-old Juanita Lopez will not only be trying to count their Christmas-time blessings absent their mother’s love, but they’ll be doing so without even the comfort of their home – it burned down December 3rd, the flames taking away the last connection to their mother’s things and their hopes for a warm Christmas with family.

Already in dire need – Brian who has Cerebral Palsy, is confined to a wheelchair in diapers, and can only be fed soft foods. With his 5-times-daily medicines – the Lopez family, headed by 44-year-old dad Sergio, had already been through much tragedy this year before the fire.

On April 17th of this year, within a few hours of their beautiful baby daughter Juanita Joselyn Lopez being born, Mrs. San Juana Lopez, who had gestational diabetes, passed away from internal bleeding of her heart.

Sergio, who was working at the time came home to an ambulance and a dying wife whose last words were: "Te encargo a mis hijos" – “take care of our children.”

Since then, the Lopez family has been working closely with several community organizations to stay afloat. It's been hard, Sergio got laid off as a brake press operator from Krack Corporation on June 18th and struggles with going back to work with two children who are completely dependant on him.

Even before the fire he and the children were struggling to cope with mom being "away".

The family was renting a home in Melrose Park, and living on the top floor when the entire home burned down December 3rd – a young single couple living in the basement lost everything as well. Thankfully, within a minute of everyone getting out safe, the windows exploded.

We, as a community, need to help this family as much as possible with resources and the following support:

We are asking families to make a donation of $10.00 or more to:
