London is a Target
for Terrorism on October 22-Fiction!
Summary of eRumor:
A story from London about a
girl who found a wallet on the ground. She opened it, saw the
picture of the owner, and ran ahead to try to find him. He was
of "Middle Eastern appearance." She found him in the
crowd and returned his wallet, which had quite a bit of money
inside. The man was surprised that it had been returned by an
honest person and gave her a tip: Don't be in London in 3
weeks' time. He said that was the biggest tip anyone would
ever give her. She went to the police, described the man and
remembered his name, and found out he was a terrorist. So, a
whole bunch of people are getting out of London because of the
belief that something may happen on October 22, 2001.
The Truth:
There is no independent confirmation of anything in this
story.
A spokesperson for the FBI in Washington D.C. says there is no
evidence of this story.
One further note and that is that this "terrorist being
compassionate to someone who helped him" pattern is a common
urban legend.
A real example of the story as it has
been circulated:
Hi everyone, Just to let you know that I am no longer going to London
this Friday....therefore, my drinks this Wednesday night have been
cancelled.
This is to let you know a disturbing story I heard yesterday
afternoon.....for those in London, I suggest you try and get out in the
next couple of weeks due to the following story:
My sister went walking with a friend, Anna, yesterday. Anna's best
friend, Emily, is from Melbourne, living in London. Last Monday, 1st
October, Emily came out of the tube and was walking amongst a pack of
people in the street (like you do in London!) and noticed a wallet drop
on the ground. She picked it up and opened it. It contained wads of cash
and a photo of a guy (he was very distinctive looking, of Middle Eastern
appearance).
She ran ahead of the crowd and then walked towards them to see if she
could find him. She saw him and ran up to him and explained she'd just
found his wallet. He appeared Shocked and said to her 'How did you know
it was mine?' She said 'I opened it and saw your photo'. He said 'I
can't believe you're giving it back to me. Most people would have fun
away with it'.
He said 'I'll give you a tip. Don't be in London in 3 weeks'
time....that's The biggest tip anyone will ever give you'. With that he
turned and walked away.
Emily, of course, freaked and ran off to the police. She remembered his
name and told the police. They freaked and said 'Oh my god, he's one of
the terrorists'. They said they would treat this seriously and it would
be escalated. .......3 weeks' time is Monday 22nd October.
Emily has booked a plane to get out of London and all her friends are
also leaving mid next week. I have just spoken to a friend who arrived
back in Melbourne about 2 hours ago from Sydney. Flight, customs, etc...
took her 7 hours. She said she's never seen so many machine guns.
EVERYONE'S bags are being fully searched. She said it was very scary.
Her friends' brother last night is in the Reserves and some ships were
secretly sent off the North West Shelf last night, in the middle of the
night as, I suppose you all know war broke out at 2.30am EST this
morning.
Maybe see some of you back on our shores soon????????? This is a true
story, so please send it to friends who are in London to let Them know.
I imagine the place they would go for would be Canary Wharf, but you
never know. Canada, France, Germany and Australia are also going to be
involved, so we are all targets, but the way Tony Blair's talking,
London is sure to be the next target. Take care, Nat
