NBC
Cuts Christ From Interview with the Widow of Fallen U.S. Navy Seal-Fiction!
Summary of the eRumor: This is a forwarded eRumor
about a television interview of the wife of a U.S. Navy Seal who
perished in an attack on a helicopter in Afghanistan. She
told NBC's Today Show Matt Lauer of her husband's love for Christ and
country. The eRumor alleges that the video that was posted on the
MSNBC site with all mentions of God and Christ edited out.
The Truth: Kimberly Vaughn, the widow of US Navy Seal
Aaron Vaughn, appeared on the
August 8, 2011 NBC Today Show with Matt Lauer and spoke of her late
husband's legacy, his love for Christ and country. We found the
video on that page to be in its complete and unedited form.
Video From MSNBC.com
There are three links to videos on that page and the Vaughn family
interview is the third one down with the title Video: Fallen SEAL was
‘willing to give his life'.
Click for MSNBC Interview.
The interview shows Aaron's father, Billy Vaugh,
saying that his son loved God and was "a man of God." Shortly after that,
Aaron's mother, Karen Vaughn, said that her son "was a man of God."
After that Kimberly Vaughn was asked by Lauer what her children would
understand about and take away from their father's legacy and her
response was "They will take away his love for Christ. They will
take away his love for this country."
Aaron Vaughn was among the 30 Americans, including 22 Navy SEALs, who
perished when Taliban fighters launched a rocket propelled grenade at
their Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan on Saturday August
6, 2011.
Various clips
from that interview along with photos reappeared on several news programs throughout the days
that followed but it would be difficult to prove than any editing of the
mention of God or Christ was intentional.
We found a report by NBC affiliate WBIR in Knoxville, TN that said that
Kimberly Vaughn told NBC's Today Show Matt Lauer that "she wants their
kids to take their father's love for Christ and this country with them."

A real example of the eRumor as it has
appeared on the Internet:
This morning on the Today Show, Matt Lauer interviewed
one of the wives of one of the Navy Seals killed this weekend. He asked
her what she would say to her children about their dad and how she would
want them to remember him...She said, and I quote, " His love for
Christ" and then continued with a few other things...through out the day
and on MSN homepage...when the story is replayed they have edited the
"Love of Christ" part out...
Why? Because using the word Christ might offend someone...well I am a
Christian and I am offended! Offended that they would edit it out.
Offended that we as Christians are asked to tread lightly so as not to
offend someone of another religion.
I think anyone who missed the original broadcast this morning should
know what NBC has done. This man loved his country and loved his God and
gave his life for both, just as Christ gave His life for him...
Please feel free to copy this and forward it to everyone on your email
list. There are emails that go around saying " If you believe in God"
then forward this...well I am starting one right here, right now...I am
not ashamed of God but I am becoming more ashamed of my country ...It is
time to take a stand.
