Warning of Valentine Virus-Truth!
Summary of the eRumor: A warning that there is a worm virus that
comes with a Valentine theme.
The Truth: This particular virus warning was apparently
distributed within the Synovus Corporation, a financial services company.
It is warning of a real virus, however, that especially circulated widely
around Valentine's day in 2007.
Warnings of the virus began circulating afresh in 2008, but most of them
appear to be alerts that were actually issued in 2007.
If you receive any emails with the subjects lines listed below---or any
that appear similar---be sure to delete the email and do not click the
attachment. It activates a virus called the Storm Worm that sends itself to any of
the email addresses found on your computer and tried to install a program
on your computer that would allow it to be used as part of a network for
sending spam to massive numbers of people.
If you have virus protection software and your virus definitions are up to
date, you should be OK.

Valentine's E-Mail Carries Worm - Do Not Open!
Synovus Information Security has identified a worm* delivered by e-mail
that has already infected PCs within the Synovus network. Bluecoat and our
filters have stopped this e-mail in many cases, but not all.
If you receive an e-mail with a subject line of "I Love
You Because," "I Love You Sooo Much," "I Dream Of You..." or any other
Valentine's theme, do not open it. Delete it immediately.
If you have already opened the message or are concerned
your machine may be infected, please contact Lela Shirley in Synovus
Information Security at 706-644-3305 immediately.
*A worm is malicious code with criminal intent that
imbeds itself in the user's PC. The Valentine's worm transfers control of
the machine to a remote user who attempts to steal account and other
personal information stored on the computer.
