An Email Petition Will Help Women in Zimbabwe-Fiction!
Summary of the eRumor: This
email summarizes some of the horrible conditions that women face in
Zimbabwe and encourages recipients to add their names to the bottom of
the email as a petition calling for better treatment for them.
It then asks that when there are 300 names, the email should be sent
to an email address at Brandeis University.
The Truth: Many
African women face deplorable conditions, but this email will not help
them. It is a revised version of an email that is being
circulated about conditions for women in Afghanistan. The
"statement" of declaration is the same as in the email about
Afghan women. The email address the finished petition is
supposed to be sent to, however, is not operating. That email
address belonged to a person at Brandeis University who received the
petition about women in Afghanistan and passed it along to people on
her email list. After that, the email was circulated as though
coming from her and as though sending the petitions to her would help
the cause. She had nothing to do with efforts about Afghanistan,
however, and does not have anything to do with efforts to help women
A real example of the eRumor as it has
appeared on the Internet:
Subject: Please help others
This could be an important step to helping
humanity. Please read and
This one is for all our Zimbabwean Sisters so, please do not ignore
This is something that we as women and essentially as human beings need
to support. Again, I don't know if this is going to help but just
take 3 minutes out of your life to do your part. Zimbabwean women are
suffering the most dreadful conditions. They are raped from the tender
age of 6 months old as well as the very elderly. They are beaten or
hacked to death, burned alive, and deprived of their families.
These women are frequently infected with Aids by their husbands who
refuse to wear condoms, having to look after Aids victims because there
is no-one else to do so. These women are rarely given the chance to
decent education and most cannot afford the basic necessities of life,
consequently are forced on the streets sometimes to survive in the
world's oldest profession. In Zimbabwean traditional societies, husbands
and relatives have such power over their women relatives, especially
their wives, many widows have had to face the double tragedy of being
homeless as well as near starvation, as the husband's
relatives still have the right to the man's property.
Everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if they are
women in a third world African country. If the superpowers can threaten
military force in Kosovo in the name of human rights for the sake of
citizens of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at the
oppression, murder and injustice committed against women in Zimbabwe.
In signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in
Zimbabwe is completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves action by the United
Nations and that the current situation overseas will not be tolerated.
Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere, and it is UNACCEPTABLE for
women in 2000 to be treated as sub-human and so much as property.
Equality and human decency is a RIGHT not a freedom, whether one lives
in Zimbabwe, Afghanistan or elsewhere.
