For those who are new to
computing, the concept of computer viruses can be confusing.
Images of runny noses, sneezing, and antibiotics don't seem to fit with
keyboards and CD-ROMS.
Computer viruses are a very real and everyday threat, however, and some
of them can cause so much destruction, it can make grown men and women
weep.
There are more than 50,000 known viruses with hundreds more being
discovered each month.
It used to be popular for Internet users to email warnings to each other
about viruses so they could be avoided.
Those were the days when if you simply refused to click suspicious
attachments to emails or tried to watch for specific infected emails,
you could remain virus-free.
That soon became an unreliable way to prevent virus infections, however.
Some new viruses could infect your computer whether you clicked an attachment
or not and the virus writers became more clever about how to trick you.
The most reliable way is now to have good virus protection software from
companies like McAfee or Symantec.
