Imgur commenters reacted to the claim, with one observing:
Even if this is just an incredibly messed up coincidence by the universe, it is still an incredibly bad look for mpd [Minneapolis Police Department].Breaking News: 6-yr-old boy shoots 5-yr-old sister dead in US; parents arrested #shorts #newsBreaking News: 6-yr-old boy shoots ...
We were able to locate Frazier’s original Facebook post, accurately depicted in the screenshot.
On the night of July 6 2021, she wrote:
I honestly can’t believe I’m making this post right now…I’m so hurt…nothing feels real. I woke up to the most horrible news. 💔MINNEAPOLIS police Killed my uncle💔MY uncle… Another black man lost his life in the hands of the police! I asked my mom several times “he died??”. I couldn’t accept what I was hearing and still can’t . Some things just take time to process. I’m still in shock and it haven’t fully hit me yet,I broke down in tears😞I was hoping it was a dream…but it’s not and this is reality. Minneapolis police has cost my whole family a big loss…today has been a day full of heartbreak and sadness😔. We went to the spot he was killed at and put beautiful flowers and candles, but even thats not enough to bring him back. 😓It’s not fair how the police can just go around killing people…WHY ARE YOU DOING A HIGH SPEED CHASE ON A RESIDENTIAL RODE??? 😩😩you took an innocent life trying to catch someone else… I don’t know how to feel… I was just with you at the beach ….if I would’ve known that would be my last time seeing you, I would’ve hugged you so much longer, told you I love you way harder….I love you so much…. please pray for my family 🙏🏽😪His name is Leneal Lamont Frazier. Uncle I love you💕it’s just hard for me to accept I won’t see you again.
Update: I found his official gofundme https://gofund.me/62d1d5bb . We appreciate ANY blessing🙏🏽❤️
In that post, she alluded to a high-speed chase involving Minneapolis police; the tweet described Frazier’s uncle as an innocent bystander. In a followup Facebook post on July 7 2021, Frazier again referenced a vehicle-related incident, and reiterated that she considered the incident to have been reckless, not targeted:
I never said the police killed him on purpose. I said it was the police’s fault. I never said it had anything to do with race, because if this was a black cop, I’d feel the same way. I honestly don’t even know the race of the cop. I just know it was a police officer behind the wheel. Before the media goes putting out a false narrative, I’ll control my own narrative. I also never said the suspect held zero responsibility, but the police made a bad decision by doing a high speed chase on a residential road. That bad decision cost my uncle his life. The police car is the car that killed my uncle. Accident or not he’s gone. Everyone made it out alive, BUT my uncle. It’s hurts different because he had NOTHING to do with this. He was on his way home. I have every right to feel the way I feel. My family as well. If it was you in my shoes, you would be doing the same. We can never just express emotions without being criticized. The same emotions everyone else has…
A GoFundMe campaign created late on July 6 or early on July 7 2021 described the circumstances of Frazier’s uncle’s death. Frazier’s status as a primary witness in the trial of Derek Chauvin was not mentioned:
Leneal [Frazier] was a family oriented person with a good heart, the biggest heart a person could ever have. He would help anyone, anytime no matter the circumstances. He was the father of 6 children and 1 grandchild. He was the oldest of 5 siblings, so of course he was their protector. He loved his family and friends. He loves to cook and bbq, and to just spend as much time with his family as possible. He was one of the sweetest people you will ever meet.
Leneal was killed Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 at the intersection of 41st Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue after being struck during a police chase. The person police were chasing got away, and Laneal who was driving a different car was killed.
Details provided by Frazier on Facebook (and separately in the GoFundMe campaign) matched news accounts of the death of a bystander on July 6 2021.
The Minnesota State Patrol is now investigating a crash involving a Minneapolis police squad car, where an innocent man was killed.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday [July 6 2021] at the intersection of 41st Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue. Police say the officer was chasing after a carjacking and robbery suspect at the time. The person police were chasing got away, and a man driving a different car was killed.
Family members told WCCO Tuesday [July 6 2021] that the victim is Leneal Frazier, a father of five who was the uncle of Darnella Frazier, the teenager who recorded the video of George Floyd’s death that was seen around the world.
On [July 7 2021], the Hennepin County Medical Examiner officially identified the victim as 40-year-old Leneal Lamont Frazier of St. Paul. The report says Frazier died from multiple blunt force injuries.
Information about the death of Darnella Frazier’s uncle Leneal Frazier circulated piecemeal on social media, but the posts were unfortunately accurate. Darnella Frazier, known for having filmed the death of George Floyd, posted to Facebook about the July 6 2021 officer-involved death of her uncle. Leneal Frazier was described as an innocent bystander, killed in the course of a high-speed police chase to which he was not a party. A GoFundMe campaign was created by a family member to raise funds for his unexpected and sudden death.
