On June 7 2019, the Facebook page “Sarcastic Mama” shared the above quote meme (archived here), featuring a photograph of Julia Roberts superimposed with a quote about women not being “rehabilitation centers for badly raised men.”
The quote attributed to Roberts said:
Women, you are not rehabilitation centers for badly raised men. It is not your job to fix him, change him, parent him. You want a partner, not a project.
It’s not clear precisely when Roberts was meme-ified as the quote’s source, but a January 2019 thread on Reddit’s r/quotes attempted to source it:
Typically, popular commentary by celebrities points or links back to an interview or appearance from which a correctly attributed quote was originally sourced. Searches for attribution of the “rehabilitation centers for badly raised men” quote often included the meme above, but we were unable to locate any link at all between the quote and Roberts, aside from sourceless reiterations of the starting around early 2019.
Another prominent search result was a February 22 2018 tweet with over 240,000 likes and nearly 100,000 retweets. That tweet did not attribute the quote to Roberts, nor any other famous speaker:
Searches for the quote restricted to results appearing before March 1 2018 did not return results indicating that Julia Roberts was its originator. The same search without Roberts’ name had a top result of the tweet, strongly indicating that Twitter user @tinkizee2 either originated or popularized the quote, not Roberts.
