Mexico Has a National Voter ID Policy-Truth!
Summary of eRumor:
This is forwarded email alleging that citizens in Mexico need to provide proof of citizenship in order to vote at elections.
The Truth:
Not only do Mexicans have to provide a voter ID card to participate in elections but they need to renew it every ten years. This according to a January 25, 2012 article in USA Today.
The federal identification card, which was implemented 20 years ago, is not just used for voting, the article said. The card issued to citizens at no charge by the Mexican Federal Electoral Institute has “become the accepted way to prove one’s identity — and is a one-card way to open a bank account, board an airplane and buy beer.”
