The initial prayer request, which appeared at Facebook community page called Healing Hugs on January 12, 2011, stated that Greg Comer’s doctors had given him just days to live, and that Comer’s son, Jacob, had asked people to start a prayer chain for his father:

Greg Comer has battled cancer for almost 7 years. The doctors are giving him only days to live. Greg is 41, married & has 2 children, Jacob,11, & Alyssa,7. Jacob asked his mother for a special request, for everyone to pray for his daddy. He wants a prayer chain across the world. Please pray for Greg and help start this prayer chain across the world for Jacob. Copy and re-post to keep prayer chain going!!

This 2011 prayer request was re-shared in 2017, more than six years after Greg Comers’ death.

The prayer request for Greg Comer was liked, shared and reposted countless time on Facebook in the days and weeks after it was posted. Then, on February 26, 2011, Greg Comers died, according to an obituary written by his family that begins:

LINCOLNTON – Gregory Lee Comer, 41, of Lincolnton, won his battle and was welcomed into Heaven to be with the Lord on February 26th, 2011. He leaves behind – but will see again one day – his loving wife Tina Hilton Comer (he called his angel, the love of his life); their daughter Alyssa Brooke Comer, and his son Jacob Carl Comer.

The obituary also makes note of the fact that Greg Comer battled cancer for nearly seven years, and how his resolve had inspired those close to him:

Greg leaves this world being remembered for so many wonderful qualities. The strength to battle his cancer for over 6 years left us in awe. His love for his family and friends was immeasurable. His concern for the happiness and well-being of those around him was humbling. The prayer request for Greg Comer re-surfaced in April 2017, with many people commenting on, sharing and reposting it. It’s not clear how or why, but it’s the same prayer request from 2011.
