Antifa Plans Declares Nationwide Civil War on November 4-Fiction!

Summary of eRumor:

Antifa plans will wage civil war on November 4, 2017, and won’t stop until President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are removed from office.

The Truth:

An organization called Refuse Fascism has called for nationwide non-violent demonstrations on November 4, 2017, but claims that Antifa planned to wage civil war on November 4 weren’t supported by facts.

The rumors started when California-based Refuse Fascism posted a video on Facebook that showed demonstrators blocking traffic with signs that spell out “November 4 It Begins.”

Refuse Fascism used the stunt to draw attention to its planned demonstrations on November 4, 2017. The group’s website states that protests would be held until “our single demand is met: This Nightmare Must End: the Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!”

Rumors that the group was calling for civil war on November 4 emerged almost immediately at sites like InfoWars, which is run by conspiracy theorist and performer Alex Jones. On September 29. 2017,  a story appearing under the headline, “Antifa Plans ‘Civil War’ to Overthrow the Government,” reported:

Antifa is planning a new round of nationwide riots on November 4 as part of a plot to start a “civil war” that will lead to the overthrow of the Trump administration.

Far-left militants plan to “gather in the streets and public squares of cities and towns across this country” in the hope of building momentum for civil unrest that leads to nothing less than domestic regime change.

Although the story uses quotation marks around “civil war,” the phrase doesn’t appear anywhere in the Refuse Fascism’s publicity materials for November 4 demonstrations. The InfoWars story points instead to a post about the November 4 demonstrations at website maintained by the Revolutionary Communists (REVCOM) group. InfoWars claims the group’s use of the term “ferocious struggle” was taken from a book written by Bob Avakian, the chairman of the Revolutionary Communists Party, called “The Coming Civil War.” By the time we looked, however, the phrases “ferocious struggle” and “civil war” didn’t appear at the site.

As further proof, InfoWars links to a video in which conservative blogger Steven Crowder infiltrates an Antifa group. The video shows one person hand a pocket knife to another, one person refer to a shotgun, and another person refer to the use of “hard tactics.” But the video isn’t related to the planned November 4 protests. It shows students at the University of Utah before an address by conservative commentator Ben Shapiro in September 2017.

Campus police launched an investigation after reviewing the video, a local Fox affiliate reports, but found that the individuals didn’t pose a credible threat. However, one of the women featured in the video was later arrested for aggravated battery:

“Police looked at the video, evaluated other information available to them, and determined the individuals did not pose a credible threat that warranted action,” Nelson told Fox 13 News.

Nelson said campus police were enforcing a strict policy of no visible weapons on campus, except those permitted by law. Face masks were also prohibited.

“Police wouldn’t arrest someone for passing or carrying a pocket knife,” Nelson said.

According to court documents, a female protester featured in Crowder’s video was later arrested for aggravated assault during one of the scuffles.

University Police were joined by other local law enforcement and federal authorities in providing security for the event. The school estimates the security costs totaled $25,000.

Refuse Fascism has also called claims that Antifa plans to wage civil war on November 4 “categorical lies.” The group clarified on its website that it has called for non-violent protests:

RefuseFascism.org has called for non-violent protests to begin on Saturday, November 4 in cities and towns across the country to raise the single demand: This Nightmare Must End: The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go! The plan is for these protests to continue every day until this demand is met. RefuseFascism.org has put forward the orientation for these protests with the slogan: In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America!

In the end, claims that Antifa will wage civil war on November 4 aren’t supported by facts. We couldn’t find any examples of Refuse Fascism or any Antifa group advocating for violence or civil war on November 4.
